Contacts & preferences
Avoid duplicate contact records before they become duplicate messages
Resolve repeated entries deliberately instead of depending on names alone.

Look for the same person twice
Duplicates may use different spellings, old company names, or multiple email addresses. Compare identity and history carefully before deciding two records represent the same person. Two clients sharing a family name or a business address are not necessarily duplicates.
Choose a reliable record
Identify which email address, dates, and preferences are current. Keep a copy of your source information while resolving conflicts through the available contact editing tools. Do not assume that importing another file automatically merges every field in the way you intend.
Review automation audiences afterward
Once the records are corrected, inspect audiences that may contain the earlier entries. Check upcoming events and recent sending history for possible overlap. If a person received an unwanted duplicate, fix the record or rule responsible before retrying anything. The goal is one accurate relationship record per intended recipient, with preferences preserved rather than overwritten for convenience.
